Port of San Diego

San Diego’s port district was created in 1962, the citizens approving more than $10 million later in 1964 for improvements to the district adding an air terminal and the construction of a new cargo terminal.

The first cruise ships offered scheduled cruises out of San Diego in 1970 making 10 day trips to Mexico. Later on in 1983 the San Diego Industry Consortium was formed for the purpose of promoting San Diego as a cruise destination.

Three years later, the B Street Pier Cruise ship Terminal was officially dedicated to this endeavor, with more than 25,000 passengers embarking and disembarking from the terminal. The importation of vehicles by the Pasha Group at the National City Marine terminal began in 1990, with a total of 15,589 vehicle units imported that first year alone.

Presently the Port imports more than 390,000 vehicles annually. Later in 2001, the Port’s Board of Commissioners announced a 20 year lease with the Dole Food Company. This marked the port’s entry into refrigerated containerized cargo shipments, which now ships out 1.8 billion pounds of bananas annually. The Port of San Diego’s vision statement is “To foster a world-class port through excellence in public service”. The Port of San Diego is the fourth largest port of the eleven ports in California.
